Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum age to become an official?

Anyone 12 years of age or older can become officials in British Columbia.  

What equipment is required to be an official?

Minimum Equipment Requirements:

  • Black CSA certified helmet
  • CSA certified half visor
  • Clean black skates with white laces
  • Elbow pads
  • Shin Pads
  • Jill
  • Clean official’s black and white sweater with the Member crest on the left chest and the Hockey Canada crest on the left shoulder
  • Referee whistle
  • Player skates
  • Black pants. Pants must be loose fitted (black track pants, actual Ref Pants or curling pants, snowsuit pants are fine too) No Lululemons, leggings, jeggings, black skin tight pants. This is unprofessional and does not allow you to fit shin pads under your pants.

You must be certified every year through BC Hockey.

Certification

New Referees - 17 years or under as of December 31st

STEP 1

All NEW Officials are required to complete the Hockey University ‘Officiating 1/2’ eLearning course in its entirety prior to registering for an HCOP certification clinic (in-person)

New for 2022-23 season the HU Officiating 1/2 course is $5.25.  BC Hockey is subsidizing the normal $25 as part of an officiating recruitment initative exclusive to the 2022-2023 season

Register for a certification clinic.

Returning Referees

>> Returning officials are required to complete the required certification for the 2022-23 season before they are eligible to officiate.

>> If you are 18 years of age or older, a valid CRC is required prior to registering for the current season. CRC's are valid for 3 seasons.

2022-23 PCAHA OFFICIALS ALLOWANCES

PCAHA Referee/Linesperson expense allowances are reviewed every three years. At the PCAHA AGM on May 29, 2022, the PCAHA membership approved increases to the expense allowance schedule in consideration of increased expenses incurred by officials, such as gas and equipment.

** When three on-ice officials are assigned to a game but fewer than the assigned number appear, those official(s) in attendance shall be paid the single referee expense allowance per the corresponding 2-Official System rate.
